Horror Stories

00:05 Hello everyone and welcome back to Horror Stories. I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. 00:17 Also don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. 00:26 Story 1 Halloween night in 2022 was supposed to be nothing more than another enjoyable evening in downtown Denver. 00:36 At 31, I had reached the point where costume parties felt more like a responsibility than something exciting. 00:43 But my roommate Jenna persuaded me to join her and our friend Ashley for a bar crawl. We spent that afternoon assembling last-minute costumes. 00:52 I dressed as a vampire with fake blood running down my chin. 00:56 Jenna went as a zombie nurse, complete with theatrical wounds painted along her arms, while Ashley turned herself into a witch using an elaborate layer of green face paint that took nearly two hours to finish. 01:08 The three of us had been close since college. 01:11 Even though we now had ordinary careers, I worked in marketing, Jenna was an elementary school teacher, and Ashley managed a boutique downtown. We still found time to go out together. 01:23 That evening began like any typical Halloween celebration. Overpriced alcohol, awful music, and grown adults staggering around in polyester costumes, our crawl carried us through five separate bars, each more crowded than the one before it. 01:39 By midnight we were worn out and ready to go home. We had wisely left our cars behind because we intended to order a rideshare. However, when we stumbled out of the last bar onto Lamer Street, the apps were showing minimum waits of 45 minutes. 01:54 Ashley repeatedly refreshed hers while complaining that surge pricing had pushed the fare to three times its usual amount. 02:01 Meanwhile, Jenna sat on the curb, carefully trying not to ruin her zombie makeup. 02:06 That was when a man dressed as a firefighter walked up to us. 02:10 His costume was one of those convincing ones made with genuinely heavy equipment, not some inexpensive party city outfit. 02:18 He seemed approachable and friendly. 02:21 Pointing toward a black SUV parked across the road, he explained that he was actually a rideshare driver and had been picking up fares throughout the night between attending parties. 02:31 According to him, his app was malfunctioning, but if we needed transportation, he could drive us for cash at the regular price. 02:39 Everything about him appeared authentic. 02:42 He knew the precise base fare for a trip to our neighborhood, had one of those pine tree air fresheners dangling from his rearview mirror, and even offered us water bottles from a cooler on the back seat. 02:53 What ultimately convinced us was his professional manner. 02:57 He entered our destination into the GPS on his phone and confirmed our names even though we had not told him what they were. 03:04 That struck me as strange for perhaps half a second until Jenna laughed and supplied her name. The rest of us followed her example. 03:12 He assisted Ashley into the front passenger seat because the enormous platform boots she was wearing made it difficult and dangerous for her to walk. 03:21 Jenna and I climbed into the back. 03:23 The SUV's interior was immaculate, with leather upholstery and phone chargers tucked into every door pocket. 03:30 It looked exactly like every other rideshare vehicle I had ever used. He even had a playlist of popular songs playing at a reasonable volume and asked whether we wanted him to switch the station. 03:42 As he drove, he casually talked about how hectic Halloween was for drivers. He mentioned specific downtown street closures that we had noticed earlier, and complained about intoxicated passengers who had made a mess inside his vehicle the weekend before. 03:57 The bottles he gave us were unopened and clearly store-bought. There was nothing suspicious about them. 04:03 I distinctly remember inspecting mine because my mother had drilled the dangers of trusting strangers into me since I was a child. 04:10 Everything that followed survives in my mind only as disconnected pieces, like fragments of a dream that become harder to grasp the more desperately you pursue them. 04:20 I remember Ashley laughing at something she saw on her phone, its glow illuminating her green-painted face inside the dark vehicle. 04:28 I recall Jenna telling us about a parent at her school who had complained that the Halloween decorations were too frightening for kindergarten students. 04:36 I also remember the driver adjusting his rearview mirror and asking whether we needed to stop anywhere before reaching home. 04:43 After that, there is nothing. It was not darkness or the sensation of falling asleep. It was a total void in my memory, as though someone had surgically cut those hours out of my mind. 04:55 The next thing I knew I was waking up on my couch at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. 05:00 I was still fully dressed in my vampire costume and the fake blood had dried, hardened and begun crumbling onto the cushions. 05:08 My phone lay dead on the coffee table. For some reason, my keys were inside the kitchen sink. 05:14 My shoes had been arranged neatly beside the front door, even though I never placed them there. 05:20 The first thing I did was plug in my phone, hoping that photographs or messages would help me reconstruct what had happened. 05:26 There was nothing after midnight, however, apart from 13 missed calls from Ashley's boyfriend, Connor. 05:33 According to my call history, I had phoned Jenna at 3.47 a.m., yet I had absolutely no memory of doing it. 05:41 When I tried to call her again, the call immediately went to voicemail. Real panic began to set in when Connor picked up on the first ring. He sounded frantic and demanded to know whether Ashley was with me. 05:53 She had never arrived home, he said, and she had not responded to any of his calls or texts. 05:59 Her phone went directly to voicemail just as Jenna's did. 06:03 Connor had already contacted the hospitals and had even driven to Ashley's parents' home in Aurora because he thought she might have gone there. 06:10 No one, however, had seen her since she left with us for the bar crawl. 06:14 My head throbbed, but it did not feel like an ordinary hangover. 06:19 A heavy, disorienting haze filled my mind, making every attempt to think feel like trying to swim through syrup. 06:26 I told Connor that I had only just awakened and could not recall anything after entering the SUV. 06:32 The silence on his side of the call lasted so long that I thought our connection had been lost. 06:38 Twenty minutes later, Jenna arrived at my apartment. She was still dressed as a zombie nurse, with mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks. 06:47 Her experience was identical to mine. 06:50 She had awakened in her own bed without remembering how she got there. Her apartment door had been left unlocked, even though she was obsessive about security. 06:59 Everything from her purse had been laid out across her kitchen counter in a manner she would never have arranged it herself. 07:05 Neither of us remembered anything beyond those first few minutes inside the SUV. Yet both of us had somehow awakened safely in our respective homes while Ashley had simply disappeared. 07:17 For the next three hours we retraced our movements. We called all five bars we had visited and even walked along Lammer Street searching for the black SUV or anyone wearing firefighter gear who might have been offering rides. 07:29 Employees at every bar remembered us. Three women wearing elaborate costumes were difficult to forget. 07:36 Unfortunately, none of the businesses had surveillance footage covering the section of the street where we had entered the vehicle. 07:43 A bouncer at the third bar recalled seeing us speak to someone dressed as a firefighter. 07:48 He said the man had remained in the area throughout the evening but had never entered any of the bars. Instead, he had lingered on the sidewalks where people were trying to find transportation. 07:58 Connor filed a missing person report by Sunday evening. 08:02 On Monday morning, two detectives arrived at my apartment to take our statements. 08:07 Detective Garrison was an older woman with gray streaks running through her hair. 08:11 She repeatedly questioned us about the bottles of water. Had we drunk from them? Had we watched the driver drink from one? Had we kept any of the bottles? 08:21 Naturally, we had not saved them. 08:24 Neither Jenna nor I could even remember whether we had consumed the water or merely held the bottles. 08:30 The younger investigator, Detective Carter, focused more heavily on the man driving the SUV. 08:37 He displayed photographs of registered rideshare drivers on his tablet and asked if we recognized anyone. 08:43 None of the men looked familiar. Then again, because it had been dark and we were intoxicated, I could hardly visualize our driver's face. 08:53 All I retained was a vague impression of facial stubble and eyes that might have been brown. 08:59 The detectives asked for the SUV's make and model, but I could only say that it was black and possibly manufactured by Chevy or GMC. 09:08 It was definitely a newer vehicle because a backup camera display was built into the dashboard. 09:13 Jenna recalled even less. 09:15 She thought the leather seats had been tan or beige and remembered seeing an energy drink can sitting in one of the cup holders. 09:22 The first significant development came on Wednesday afternoon when Detective Garrison called to tell us that they had obtained footage from an ATM camera located two blocks away from where we had been picked up. 09:34 The video was timestamped 1223 AM. It showed the SUV leaving the curb with all three of us visible through its windows. 09:43 Mud or perhaps some other substance deliberately applied partially concealed the license plate. 09:49 Investigators could still determine that it was a Colorado plate beginning with the letter F. 09:54 More importantly, they followed the vehicle through several traffic cameras as it traveled east across downtown. 10:01 It then turned into an industrial district near the railroad tracks and disappeared. 10:06 No cameras monitored that particular area, and the SUV was never recorded rejoining any of the major roads covered by surveillance. 10:14 Police units searched the district, including its vacant lots and abandoned warehouses, but it seemed as though the SUV had vanished into thin air. 10:23 Garrison also mentioned a detail that made my chest tighten. 10:27 The ATM video showed the driver briefly stepping out to help Ashley enter the front passenger seat. 10:33 Despite the warm October weather, he had been wearing thick work gloves. 10:37 Everything became considerably worse on Friday morning. 10:41 A jogger discovered Ashley's phone inside a drainage ditch roughly eight miles beyond the city limits. 10:47 It was near an old access road that was used almost exclusively for illegal dumping. 10:52 Her phone had still been recording. 10:54 The audio recording had begun at 12.31 Tuesday morning, approximately eight minutes after we entered the SUV. 11:02 It continued uninterrupted for 67 hours until the battery finally ran out. 11:08 The police refused to disclose everything captured in the recording, but the expression on Detective Garrison's face revealed more than her words ever could. 11:17 pale while explaining that the first hour mostly consisted of muffled conversation and the sounds of a moving car. 11:24 That was followed by lengthy stretches of silence, occasionally interrupted by noises investigators were still attempting to analyze. 11:32 They did tell us that around 40 minutes into the recording, Ashley could be heard clearly saying that she felt ill. She then asked why Jenna and I were not responding to her, After that point, Ashley's voice never appeared on the recording again. There were only environmental sounds and much later, something that might have been footsteps crossing gravel. 11:53 The recording contained another discovery that made the situation infinitely more disturbing. 11:58 At 1.15 am, the unmistakable noise of a garage door opening and closing could be heard. 12:04 That was followed by clear sounds of activity, as though furniture was being rearranged or heavy items were being pulled across a concrete floor. 12:13 At 2.47 am, another vehicle started. 12:17 Based on the engine, investigators believed it was probably a truck. 12:21 The phone recorded the second vehicle traveling for approximately 22 minutes before coming to a stop. Then came the most horrifying part, the repeated sound of a shovel striking earth, measured and methodical, continuing for nearly an hour. 12:36 Technical specialists were enhancing the audio, trying to isolate voices or any identifiable noises captured during those critical hours. 12:45 Investigators also attempted to reconstruct the phone's route through its GPS information. Whoever possessed it, however, had disabled its location services after the first hour. 12:56 The phone had apparently remained in the drainage ditch from approximately 4 o'clock Sunday morning until the jogger discovered it on Friday. 13:04 Garrison asked whether we could recall anyone discussing construction sites or property outside Denver. 13:10 Our minds, however, contained nothing but blank walls where those missing hours should have been. 13:16 On Saturday, investigators made the most terrifying discovery yet. The technical team successfully enhanced a section recorded at approximately 3.30 a.m. 13:26 They isolated what seemed to be a muffled exchange between two men, the man dressed as a firefighter and someone else. 13:33 The second speaker asked about the other two and whether they would remember anything. 13:38 The response was too distorted to understand in full, but the specialists identified the word dose and another phrase that seemed to refer to their apartments. 13:48 That was when the truth struck me with complete clarity. The man had entered my home. He had physically carried me inside, deliberately arranged my belongings. and placed me on the couch like a figure in some grotesque dollhouse. 14:02 Jenna completely broke down when she understood that he had done the same thing to her. 14:07 He had probably stood in our bedrooms while we lay unconscious, watching us and deciding what he intended to do. 14:13 The police immediately searched our apartments for fingerprints and DNA. Whoever had done this, however, had been extraordinarily meticulous. 14:22 They recovered no fingerprints except our own. There was no foreign DNA and no fibers or hair that could not be attributed to us or people who regularly visited. 14:32 Even the water bottles from the SUV had vanished, probably discarded with every other piece of evidence from the vehicle. 14:39 The investigation expanded when the FBI became involved. Background noises captured in the recording suggested that the suspected kidnapping might have crossed state lines into Wyoming or Nebraska. 14:51 Investigators brought cadaver dogs into the industrial district where the SUV had disappeared. The dogs alerted at several locations, but no body was found. 15:01 Connor, meanwhile, was barely able to function. He moved into his parents' house because he could no longer bear to remain in the apartment he had shared with Ashley. 15:10 The most horrifying aspect was the amount of calculation behind everything. 15:15 The person responsible had studied rideshare applications. knew precisely what fair to quote, understood which locations contained gaps in camera coverage, and had somehow administered exact enough doses to three people. The two survived while the third vanished. 15:31 He had known our names before we introduced ourselves. That meant he had probably been monitoring us all evening. He might have overheard us using one another's names inside a bar or seen our identification when employees checked it. 15:45 Even his firefighter costume had been chosen deliberately. People naturally trust first responders. They lower their defenses around someone who appears to be a hero. 15:56 Every component of his plan had been carefully arranged, from the SUV's convincing rideshare setup, to his ability to make Jenna and me appear as though we had simply consumed too much alcohol. 16:07 When neither of us remembered the evening, no one would immediately assume that a crime had occurred. 16:12 Two weeks later, the investigation finally advanced because of pure chance. 16:17 A construction worker renovating an old fire station 40 miles away discovered a firefighter uniform hidden behind a loose wall panel. 16:25 Beside it were a set of vehicle keys and a roll of cash. The keys opened a black suburban registered to Gregory Hoffman, whose family had reported him missing three days before Halloween. 16:37 One week later, police located his SUV in a field near the Kansas border. It had been completely stripped and burned. 16:44 Even so, forensic investigators recovered traces of blood from its cargo area, and the DNA belonged to Ashley. 16:52 Gregory Hoffman's body was eventually discovered in the basement of his own house. 16:57 He had been dead since October 28th, murdered at home while his family believed he had left on a hunting trip. 17:03 The actual killer had stolen both Gregory's identity and his vehicle. then used them to hunt on Halloween night. 17:11 Security footage from a gas station near Gregory's residence showed a man filling the Suburban's tank on October 30th. 17:18 He wore a baseball cap and deliberately kept his face turned away from the cameras. 17:22 His physical build, however, matched the little Jenna and I could remember. 17:27 The same individual later appeared on traffic cameras driving toward downtown Denver on Halloween night, already dressed in the firefighter uniform. 17:36 Ashley's body was never recovered despite months of searching with ground-penetrating radar, cadaver dogs, and teams of volunteers. 17:45 The man who abducted her was never captured either. 17:48 DNA recovered from Gregory's residence did not match anyone in law enforcement databases. 17:54 The fingerprints taken from Gregory's basement door belonged to someone who had never been arrested or held any position that required prints to be recorded. 18:03 Jenna eventually returned to Ohio to live with her relatives because she could no longer endure staying in Denver. 18:09 Connor left the state altogether. 18:11 The last information I received was that he had gone to Florida and was attempting to rebuild his life. 18:17 I still occupy the same apartment, although I have added three deadbolts and installed a security system sophisticated enough to rival one protecting a bank. 18:27 Those lost hours have never returned to me, even after hypnotherapy and several other treatments intended to recover memories. 18:34 At times I wonder whether my inability to remember is actually an act of mercy, whether my mind is shielding me from something too terrible to confront. 18:44 The police have kept the investigation active. They contact me occasionally whenever they uncover a possible lead, but none of those leads has ever produced anything. 18:53 They did reveal one final element from Ashley's recording. 18:57 During its last hour shortly before the battery died, a train horn could be heard far in the distance. There was also what sounded like someone whistling a children's tune, although investigators were never able to determine which song it was. 19:11 Ashley's parents still call me from time to time. They do not blame me. They are simply desperate for me to remember something, anything, that could help them locate their daughter. 19:21 I can only repeat what I know. Ashley entered that vehicle with Jenna and me. After that, she was gone and the two of us were fortunate enough to wake up. 19:36 Story 2 Halloween night, 2018. 19:41 At 16, the most serious concern in my life was whether Brad from chemistry class had noticed my new haircut. 19:47 My parents owned a modest bookstore downtown, and we lived in an aging Victorian home on the outskirts of Riverside, California, right where the neighborhood gave way to the woods. 19:58 That evening my younger brother, Lucas, was sleeping over at a friend's house. 20:03 My parents went to bed at approximately 11 o'clock after giving candy to the final trick-or-treaters. 20:10 I remained awake in my bedroom, browsing Instagram and exchanging messages with my best friend Kayla about the party we had missed because my father said it would end too late. 20:20 The house had finally fallen silent. The only sounds were the occasional creak of the old wood settling and the wind passing through the enormous oak tree beyond my window. 20:29 At around 12.30 I heard it. 20:32 A soft, measured knocking came from downstairs. It was neither violent nor especially loud, only persistent. 20:40 Three knocks. A pause. 20:42 Three more knocks. Another pause. 20:45 Initially I assumed a group of drunk teenagers was fooling around. trying to deliver one final scare before Halloween officially ended. 20:54 We had experienced similar problems before with students from the high school throwing eggs at houses or abandoning disturbing dolls on porches as pranks. 21:03 I slipped out of my bedroom, carefully stepping around the squeaky floorboard beside my door, and proceeded down the hallway. 21:10 The knocking continued at the same patient, steady rhythm as if the person outside had all the time in the world. 21:17 From the upstairs landing I could see the front entrance through the stairway railing. The porch light was illuminated, projecting long shadows through the door's frosted glass panels. 21:27 I quietly descended to the living room and approached the window beside the door, my bare feet making no sound against the hardwood floor. 21:35 The blinds were shut, but I tilted them just far enough to look outside without revealing myself. 21:41 The sight on the other side caught the breath in my throat. A woman sat on our porch steps with her back facing the door. 21:48 She had no shoes on, which seemed especially strange in late October. 21:52 Her shoulders trembled as though she were either sobbing or freezing. 21:56 Long tangled hair descended along her back in dark matted strands. 22:01 She appeared to be wearing a pale blue dress or nightgown. 22:05 Even from behind her I could make out dark stains spreading across the material. 22:10 There was something broken about the way she sat, hunched forward and gently rocking. 22:15 She had stopped knocking. 22:17 Now she merely remained on the steps, shivering beneath the yellow glow of our porch light. 22:22 I must have made a sound because she began turning her head. I immediately pulled away from the window. 22:28 My heart was beating so violently that I could hear it in my ears. 22:32 One part of me wanted to wake my parents immediately, while another kept insisting that the woman might need assistance. 22:39 Perhaps she had suffered an accident, or maybe somebody had hurt her. 22:43 I cautiously looked between the blinds once more and managed to see part of her face in profile. Her skin appeared extremely pale, almost grey beneath the porch light. Dark lines ran down both cheeks, although I could not tell whether they were caused by cosmetics, dirt, or something else. 23:01 She repeatedly glanced over her shoulder toward the road, each looked quick and anxious, as if she expected someone to arrive at any second. 23:10 Then she resumed knocking more forcefully than before. 23:14 I heard her voice as well, hoarse and desperate, calling out something I could not properly understand through the closed door. 23:21 The knocking became loud enough to awaken my parents. I heard their bedroom door open upstairs. My father descended wearing pajamas and a bathrobe, squinting beneath the hallway light. 23:33 What's happening? He asked when he saw me pressed against the wall beside the window. 23:38 I pointed at the entrance and quietly told him about the woman outside. He frowned before walking over and looking through the peephole. In a matter of seconds, his expression shifted from irritation to concern. 23:51 He turned toward me and spoke quietly. 23:53 Go get your mother. Tell her to bring her phone. 23:57 While I rushed upstairs, I heard him opening the deadbolt. My mother was already awake and sitting upright in bed. 24:04 As soon as I explained that a woman was outside, she picked up her phone and followed me downstairs. 24:09 We discovered my father standing at the doorway. The chain remained secured while he spoke through the narrow opening. 24:16 From where I stood, I could now hear the woman clearly. Her voice sounded raw and frantic. 24:22 Please, please, you need to help me. He's coming after me. 24:26 I escaped, but he's coming. Please let me inside, please. 24:31 The sentences poured from her mouth in a frantic rush. Some of her words were slurred as if she were intoxicated or in a state of shock. 24:39 My father attempted to settle her down. He asked what had occurred, who was pursuing her, and whether she required an ambulance. She continued repeating the same claims. Somebody was approaching. She had barely managed to escape, and we had to contact the police immediately. 24:57 My mother was already calling 911 and giving the dispatcher our address in the composed tone she always used during a crisis. 25:04 The woman began sobbing even more intensely. They were dreadful, strangled cries that caused my chest to tighten. Then she abruptly fell silent. 25:14 Oh God, she whispered. I can hear his car. He found me. He found me again. 25:21 My father instantly closed and locked the door. He ordered us to move away from the windows. 25:27 Outside, the woman began hammering against the entrance and screaming, pleading with us not to abandon her on the porch. 25:34 It was horrible. Her voice contained the sound of absolute terror. 25:39 My mother remained on the line, describing the emergency to the dispatcher and insisting that officers needed to reach us immediately. 25:47 Amid all the confusion, I never heard the sound of an approaching engine. 25:51 No headlights appeared through the curtains either. 25:54 Still, the woman became hysterical. She scrambled across our porch, her bare feet striking the wooden boards. 26:01 We could hear her checking our windows and desperately pulling on them. 26:05 My father removed a baseball bat from the hallway closet and placed himself between the front door and the rest of us. 26:11 for perhaps 30 seconds the house and porch became completely silent except for my mother's voice as she continued supplying information to the police then the woman released a shriek it did not sound like a frightened scream it was primitive and enraged a moment later we heard her running her naked feet pounded across the porch descended the steps and struck the gravel driveway Despite my father shouting for me to remain where I was, I rushed to the side window. 26:42 Under the moonlight, I watched the woman race toward the tree line behind our home. 26:46 The pale dress or nightgown streamed behind her like the garment of a ghost. 26:51 She moved remarkably fast for somebody who had seemed so wounded and helpless. 26:55 Within seconds, she disappeared among the trees. 26:59 The police reached our house approximately eight minutes later. Two patrol vehicles arrived with their emergency lights flashing, and officers carrying flashlights examined our porch and property. They found drops and streaks of blood on the steps. They also discovered impressions from bare feet in the soil leading toward the forest. 27:18 My parents described everything that had occurred while I sat on the couch, wrapped in a blanket my mother had given me, attempting to understand what we had just witnessed. 27:28 After recording our statements, two officers entered the woods with flashlights while the others remained behind to inspect the area surrounding our house. 27:36 We waited in the living room for what seemed like an eternity, drinking coffee my mother had prepared to help us remain awake. 27:44 Approximately 40 minutes later, the officers returned from the forest, shaking their heads. 27:49 They had managed to follow the footprints for roughly a quarter of a mile before the tracks vanished near the creek running through the woods. 27:56 There was no trace of the woman. 27:59 They requested additional personnel in a K-9 unit, widening the search zone. 28:04 One officer remained at our residence in case she returned while everyone else helped coordinate the effort. 28:10 My father paced constantly, repeatedly testing every lock on every door and window. 28:16 None of us understood why a person so desperate to receive assistance would suddenly flee, particularly into a forest at night without shoes. 28:24 The officer staying with us explained that victims of domestic violence sometimes behave unpredictably, torn between asking for help and trying to protect the person abusing them. 28:35 Even so, the entire incident felt wrong to me. 28:38 She had claimed to hear somebody approaching when there had been no vehicle. Even more disturbing was the way her terror had turned into fury within a matter of seconds. 28:48 At approximately 4 o'clock that morning we received an update. A detective arrived at our door looking exhausted and grim. 28:56 Officers had discovered a vehicle at the bottom of a ravine around three miles from our residence beside an old service road running parallel to the forest. 29:05 It was a silver sedan completely demolished as though it had left the road while traveling at high speed. 29:11 Two bodies were inside. A man in his 30s occupied the driver's seat and a woman sat beside him in the passenger seat. 29:19 According to the detective, Both had already been dead for several hours, likely since sometime before midnight. 29:26 The dead woman matched the general appearance of the visitor we had seen. 29:31 Her approximate age and hair color were similar. 29:34 Then the detective disclosed the detail that silenced everyone. Both victims were still secured by their seat belts. Investigators had found no indication that anybody else had occupied the vehicle. The blood evidence established that both victims died on impact. It would have been impossible for either of them to leave the wreckage, much less travel to our house and pound against our front door. 29:57 The detective questioned us again, asking for every detail we could remember about the woman. 30:03 A forensic team arrived to gather samples of the blood on our porch and photograph the footprints. Then my mother remembered our doorbell camera and showed investigators its recording. 30:13 In the confusion, all of us had forgotten that the camera was there. The nighttime footage was grainy, but the woman remained clearly visible. 30:21 It showed someone in a light blue dress sitting on the porch steps. She then stood, struck the front door repeatedly, and finally ran toward the woods. 30:30 The video bore a timestamp of 12.47 in the morning. 30:35 According to the coroner's initial estimate, however, the accident had taken place at approximately 11 p.m., possibly even earlier. 30:43 The detective repeatedly asked whether we were certain that only one woman had been present. 30:48 He wondered whether a second person could have been concealed nearby, but every member of my family saw the same individual and heard the same voice. 30:57 The search continued for several days. Investigators even used dogs specifically trained to locate injured individuals. 31:05 They discovered nothing. 31:07 There were no additional footprints, no fragments of torn material clinging to tree branches, and no blood extending beyond our property into the forest. 31:16 The formal investigation lasted several weeks. Authorities identified the crash victims as a couple from two towns away who had been returning home from a Halloween party. 31:26 The man's blood alcohol concentration exceeded the legal limit. 31:30 Investigators theorized that he had chosen the back road to avoid the primary highway, then lost control of the sedan while navigating a curve. 31:39 They never found an explanation for what my family witnessed that night. 31:43 No psychiatric patient had escaped from any nearby institution. There was no missing person whose appearance matched the woman on our porch. 31:51 The deceased woman did not have an identical twin. The blood collected from our steps matched the female crash victim. 31:59 The forensic specialists, however, could not explain how it reached our property. 32:04 In the end, authorities closed the matter as a traffic accident involving unexplained circumstances. 32:10 We moved away six months later. 32:12 It was not precisely because we were frightened. We left because none of us could pass those porch steps without remembering the woman's voice, her frantic knocking, or the sight of her disappearing into the darkness. 32:25 I still dream about that night occasionally. 32:28 Sometimes I awaken believing I can hear someone outside the door pleading to be allowed in. 32:38 Story 3 The strange thing about college parties is that after enough time, they all begin to blur together. 32:46 But that October night at the house on Birch Avenue remains branded into my memory like a scar that refuses to disappear. 32:53 I was midway through my junior year at State University, struggling through economics classes and living on ramen noodles and energy drinks like every other broke student. 33:03 My roommate Jake Sullivan and I had been inseparable since freshman orientation. 33:08 Ours was one of those friendships that seemed to form instantly. 33:12 Jake possessed an incredible talent for connecting with virtually anyone. He could enter a room filled with complete strangers and leave with five new phone numbers and weekend plans. 33:23 He was the kind of person who would lend you his last $20, even though he knew you would probably forget to repay him. 33:30 He would cross town at 3 o'clock in the morning to collect you if your ride abandoned you. 33:35 He always knew when a terrible joke was exactly what you needed to break the tension during final exams. 33:41 During those first two years, we experienced practically everything together. 33:46 Failed tests, successful parties, and the disastrous spring break road trip during which his car broke down in the middle of nowhere. That particular Saturday night we were heading to what everyone had labeled the party of the semester. 34:00 Several seniors were hosting it in an ancient rental house that appeared not to have undergone repairs since the 1970s. Jake and I arrived at approximately 10 o'clock wearing matching zombie costumes. They were essentially thrift store outfits that we had torn apart with scissors and covered with fake blood, which stained everything we touched. 34:20 The house was completely chaotic when we entered. At least 200 people were packed from wall to wall. 34:26 The combination of artificial fog and body heat made the air so dense that breathing required effort. The seniors had transformed the entire place. Strobe lights capable of causing seizures flashed throughout what had once been the living room. 34:41 The kitchen had become a disorderly bar where people combined drinks using whatever ingredients they could locate. 34:47 Artificial spider webs and plastic skeletons hung from every doorway and lighting fixture. The basement, however, was the primary attraction. They had converted it into an underground nightclub filled with ultraviolet lighting. 35:00 Neon paint covered the concrete walls, glowing through the darkness like toxic waste. 35:06 Reaching it required forcing your way through a mass of sweating bodies on a staircase so narrow that everyone had to turn sideways. People raised their drinks over their heads to prevent them from spilling, while the temperature increased with every descending step. Once you reached the bottom, the heat struck like the blast from a sauna. 35:25 The bass from the speakers was so powerful that it seemed to vibrate through your bones. 35:30 Everyone was pressed together so tightly that the crowd moved like one enormous organism in the darkness. 35:36 At around midnight, Jake and I stood against the basement's rear wall, trying to recover our breath between songs. The face paint we had so carefully applied earlier was now streaming down our skin in gray lines, making us resemble melting wax figures more than zombies. 35:53 Jake had spent the previous hour dancing with a girl dressed as a vampire. 35:57 After she went upstairs with her friends, he began performing exaggerated dance moves solely to make me laugh. 36:03 The crowd became more unruly with every passing minute. People climbed onto one another's shoulders while drinks flew in every direction. 36:12 Someone had brought a can of glow-in-the-dark silly string and started spraying it over everyone nearby. 36:18 Jake leaned close and shouted into my ear that he needed fresh air because the heat was making him lightheaded. 36:24 Then he began pushing through the crowd toward what he believed was an exit in the corner. 36:29 I nodded before turning my attention back to the people around me. I assumed he would return in five minutes, as he always did. 36:37 There were so many bodies compressed into that basement that whenever somebody shoved from behind, the entire crowd lurched forward like a row of dominoes. By the time I looked again toward the corner Jake had approached, he had already vanished among the people. 36:51 Twenty minutes passed, followed by thirty, and Jake still had not returned. 36:56 Initially, I was unconcerned. I figured he had encountered someone upstairs and become involved in a conversation. 37:03 Perhaps he had joined the bathroom line, which extended halfway along the hallway. 37:08 I forced my way up the basement stairs, feeling the temperature fall with each step. My sweat-soaked shirt became cold against my skin. 37:16 The main floor was equally crowded, although noticeably cooler. 37:21 People lay across the couches and couples kissed in corners. 37:25 Somebody had organized a beer pong competition in what had originally been the dining room. 37:30 I searched the kitchen and the rear porch, where all the smokers had gathered. 37:34 I even spent 10 minutes waiting outside the bathroom because I thought Jake might be sick inside. 37:40 I asked several people whether they had seen a tall man dressed as a zombie, but approximately 30 guests matched that description. 37:47 The unsettling part was that every call to Jake's phone went directly to voicemail. 37:52 It did not ring at all, as if his phone had been turned off or its battery had died. 37:58 That was completely unlike him. 38:00 Jake was the type of person who would respond to messages while taking a shower. He carried a portable charger in his pocket because he never allowed his phone to lose power. 38:10 By 1am, genuine panic had begun to take hold. 38:13 i had searched every room twice i had even returned to the basement in case i had somehow overlooked him among the crowd the party continued at full intensity but i could no longer concentrate on anything except finding jake i located steve a guy who lived farther down the hallway from us in the dormitory and explained that my roommate had vanished he agreed to help me search again this time we examined the entire property methodically We checked every bedroom and closet and even searched the backyard, where several people had constructed a bonfire inside a metal garbage can. 38:50 Steve suggested that perhaps Jake had met someone and left with her. That explanation made no sense to me either. Jake would have sent me a message. He would have used one of those ridiculous emoji combinations that only he considered funny and told me he was leaving. 39:05 Besides, his car remained exactly where we had parked it three blocks away. 39:10 I had gone outside to check it, hoping he might have felt ill and decided to sleep inside. 39:16 The windows had fogged in the cold, but I could see well enough to confirm that he was not there. 39:21 His spare key also remained inside the magnetic container beneath the wheel well, where he always kept it. 39:27 Eventually I found the host, a senior named Kevin whom I had met only once before. 39:33 I asked whether the basement contained any additional exits, somewhere Jake might have gone to breathe fresh air. 39:40 Kevin stared at me as though I had lost my mind. His pupils were dilated, and he was clearly several drinks into the evening. 39:47 He claimed that the narrow staircase used by the guests was the basement's only entrance. 39:52 According to him, the door in the corner had been locked and obstructed for months. 39:57 When I insisted that Jake had headed toward that corner, Kevin became defensive. 40:01 He said the area was forbidden and that they had deliberately placed boxes and old furniture in front of the door to prevent intoxicated guests from interfering with it. 40:11 But I knew that Jake had walked in that direction. 40:14 I could clearly visualize him weaving through the crowd, one hand raised in that partial wave he always used, heading directly toward the corner. 40:22 Kevin became increasingly hostile. He demanded to know why I was trying to create trouble and suggested that my friend had probably left without bothering to tell me. He ordered me to calm down and stop making accusations. 40:35 The music continued pounding from the basement. Suddenly, instead of sounding exciting, its rhythm felt menacing, as though something horrific was taking place just beyond our sight. 40:46 Steve and I descended into the basement one final time. We activated the flashlights on our phones so we could see through the ultraviolet glow and inspect the corner properly. 40:57 The crowd had diminished slightly, allowing us to force our way toward the back wall without too much difficulty. 41:04 There were in fact several boxes stacked in the corner. They were old cardboard containers with ripped edges and water damage. Beside them stood what appeared to be a broken couch positioned vertically on one end. 41:16 Then I examined the floor more carefully and noticed something that tightened my chest. 41:21 Fresh scratches marked the concrete, as though somebody had recently pulled a heavy object across it. 41:27 The patterns in the dust did not align either. 41:30 Clean rectangular sections revealed where boxes had remained for an extended period, but those marks did not correspond with the box's current positions. 41:40 Someone had recently moved everything, perhaps even that same evening. 41:44 Steve noticed it as well and began pulling one of the containers aside to discover what was concealed behind it. 41:51 Before he could get far, Kevin appeared with two other men. All three were larger than us, and they ordered us to leave immediately. 41:59 It was not a request. They grabbed our arms and physically marched us toward the stairs. 42:05 Kevin threatened to call the police unless we left his home at once, accusing us of ruining the atmosphere and frightening the other guests. 42:13 They literally threw us through the front entrance. Steve stumbled and nearly fell down the porch steps. 42:19 I tried once more to explain that my closest friend had disappeared and that something was seriously wrong. 42:25 Kevin stood in the doorway with his arms folded across his chest. His entire expression had transformed. 42:32 The welcoming party host was gone, replaced by somebody cold and threatening. 42:37 He said Jake had most likely met a girl and left, something that happened constantly at parties. He warned that if I returned or attempted to create further problems, he would make certain campus security heard about it. 42:50 The entrance slammed shut before us, and we heard the deadbolt slide into place. 42:55 Suddenly, we were standing on the sidewalk in the cold October night while the celebration continued inside without us. 43:02 Steve wanted to go home. He repeatedly argued that we should wait until the next day, when everyone was sober. 43:09 I could not stop thinking about the new scrape marks on the basement floor. 43:13 I called Jake perhaps 50 times and sent message after message. 43:17 I even attempted to phone his mother back home but ended the call before it connected. 43:22 What could I possibly tell her? That her son had disappeared at a party and that the host was behaving suspiciously. 43:30 I assumed the police would laugh at me. They would probably conclude that Jake was drunk somewhere or had gone home with someone, just as everyone else kept suggesting. 43:39 I remained outside the house until 4 o'clock in the morning, sitting inside my car across the street and watching guests gradually emerge as the gathering came to an end. 43:50 Every time the front door opened, my heart accelerated because I thought the person stepping outside might be Jake. 43:56 It never was. 43:58 At approximately 3.30, I saw Kevin and his roommates carrying bags of garbage toward the curb. They moved quickly and quietly, as though they were deliberately trying to avoid attention. 44:09 One bag ripped when they threw it down. Something resembling clothing spilled onto the pavement. Before I could examine it properly, they gathered the items and shoved them into another bag. The basement light remained illuminated long after every other light in the house had gone dark. 44:26 I could see shadows passing behind the small windows at ground level. 44:30 However, the glass was so dirty and heavily painted that I could not determine what was happening inside. 44:36 My phone's battery finally died around sunrise, and I returned to campus. 44:41 During the drive, my mind raced through every conceivable explanation. 44:45 Perhaps Jake had become ill and somebody transported him to a hospital. 44:50 Maybe he experienced an allergic reaction. Perhaps there was another exit that I did not know about and for some unexplained reason he had departed without his vehicle. 44:59 On Sunday morning I reported him missing to campus police. 45:03 At first they clearly did not consider the situation serious. The responding officer repeatedly asked whether Jake had been drinking, whether the two of us had argued, and whether he had ever disappeared without telling anyone. 45:16 I supplied Kevin's name and address. 45:19 I described the basement, the obstructed door, the host's suspicious conduct, and the fact that Jake's car remained parked near the house. 45:29 Only after I explained that Jake had a midterm examination on Monday, maintained perfect attendance, and would never willingly miss a test did the officers finally agree to perform a welfare check. 45:40 I accompanied them, sitting in the rear of the patrol car as we traveled to Birch Avenue. My stomach churned with equal parts hope and dread. 45:49 In daylight the property looked different, shabbier and smaller, with limp Halloween decorations hanging sadly from its porch railings. 45:57 Kevin answered the door looking exhausted and irritated. His demeanor changed instantly when he noticed the police uniforms. 46:05 He became accommodating and concerned. 46:07 He said he would assist in any way possible, expressed hope that Jake was unharmed, and explained that parties of that size sometimes became chaotic and caused people to wander away. 46:18 The officers first inspected the house's principal floors. Kevin followed them and emphasized that hundreds of people had passed through the property, making it impossible to determine where each person had gone. 46:31 When they entered the basement, I watched Kevin's jaw tense as the officers approached the corner filled with boxes. 46:37 He quickly explained that it was nothing more than a storage section. He claimed it had remained closed for months because of water damage and insisted that nobody could have entered it during the party. 46:49 One of the officers, an older woman with observant eyes, saw the same scratches on the concrete that I had noticed. 46:55 She instructed Kevin to move the boxes. He initially resisted, claiming that the area was unsafe and that the landlord had explicitly prohibited anyone from passing beyond that point. 47:06 The officers insisted. 47:08 Removing everything required approximately 10 minutes. 47:12 With every box they moved, Kevin became increasingly distressed. His roommates had assembled at the top of the staircase and watched nervously. 47:20 A door stood behind the pile of debris, exactly as I suspected. 47:25 It was not, however, what I had anticipated. The door consisted of thick wood strengthened with metal braces. A padlock that appeared brand new hung from its latch. 47:36 Kevin immediately claimed he did not possess the key. He suggested that the landlord had probably secured the entrance and said it likely led to outdated heating machinery or something similar. 47:47 The officers forced him to telephone the landlord in their presence. 47:51 While we waited, I saw one of Kevin's roommates quietly retreat upstairs. removing his phone as he went. 47:57 The landlord reached the property within 20 minutes. He was an anxious older man named George Hoffman who continually wiped his hands against his jeans. 48:06 He fumbled through a large keyring for what seemed like an eternity. 48:10 His fingers trembled when he finally located the appropriate key and inserted it into the padlock. 48:17 Behind the door was a wooden staircase descending into darkness, far beneath the ordinary basement level. 48:23 An odor rose through the opening that forced everyone to step backward. It was damp, metallic, and unmistakably wrong. 48:31 The officers entered first with their flashlights while the rest of us waited above. 48:35 Kevin had fallen entirely silent, his face drained to gray. 48:40 I listened as the officers moved below us, their voices producing strange echoes through the hidden space. 48:47 Then one of them shouted for everyone to move back and warned us not to approach any closer. 48:52 The older officer hurried up the staircase, already speaking over her radio. Her face had become pale as she called for backup and crime scene technicians. 49:02 She refused to explain what they had discovered. 49:05 She repeatedly told me to remain outside because the house was now part of an active criminal investigation. 49:11 I did, however, hear her report to the dispatcher that they had located what appeared to be an old storm shelter that someone had recently entered. 49:19 It contained blood evidence and one brown leather sneaker matching the description of Jake's footwear. 49:25 Within an hour, police tape sealed the entire street. Detectives and forensic personnel swarmed the property. 49:32 Kevin and all three of his roommates were arrested immediately and confined inside separate patrol vehicles while officers processed the scene. 49:40 I spent hours sitting on the curb across from the house, watching investigators remove evidence bags. 49:46 Each new bag destroyed a little more of my hope. 49:49 Eventually, a detective named Melissa Chen approached and sat beside me. 49:54 Speaking gently, she described what investigators had reconstructed so far. The underground room was a concrete storm shelter constructed during the 1950s at the height of the Cold War. 50:05 Earlier tenants had used it for storage until it was supposedly sealed five years previously. 50:11 Kevin and his roommates discovered the bunker after renting the house and had been using it for an activity that Detective Chen would not yet identify. 50:19 Something that required them to soundproof the room and install a new ventilation system. 50:24 Investigators found indications that someone had recently been restrained inside. There were signs of a struggle and blood across the concrete walls. 50:33 Jake's shoe lay in the shelter beside his wallet and phone. His phone had been smashed into fragments. 50:39 Detective Chen said the search remained active. Additional passageways connected the bunker with the city's old maintenance tunnels. 50:47 Jake might have escaped through those passages, or someone could have moved him into them. 50:52 The complete truth emerged three days later. 50:55 One of Kevin's roommates, Paul Morrison, finally broke down and disclosed everything to the police in exchange for a plea agreement. 51:02 The group had been operating an underground fighting ring inside the storm shelter. They brought intoxicated college students into the bunker and forced them to fight for money while other people wagered on the results. 51:14 Jake had apparently discovered the operation while searching for the exit door. Through an opening between the stacked boxes, he saw something he was never supposed to witness. 51:24 Kevin and his roommates panicked. They grabbed Jake and pulled him down into the shelter while trying to decide what they should do with him. 51:31 Jake resisted more fiercely than they expected. 51:35 During the confrontation, he freed himself and ran deeper into the tunnels. 51:39 His captors pursued him but lost him within the maze of old maintenance corridors. 51:44 Search teams spent two weeks exploring those tunnels with dogs and thermal imaging cameras. They eventually located Jake approximately a mile from the house. He was alive but only barely. 51:56 Jake had spent three days wandering through total darkness. 52:00 At some point he had fallen down a maintenance shaft and fractured his leg. He remained alive by drinking condensation from the pipes. 52:08 He had lost a terrifying amount of weight. For several weeks following his rescue he could not stop trembling. But he survived and that was the only fact that mattered to me. Kevin received a 15-year sentence for kidnapping and operating an illegal gambling enterprise. His roommates received shorter sentences because they cooperated with authorities. 52:29 State University prohibited parties at all off-campus houses for the remainder of the academic year. 52:35 The property on Birch Avenue was condemned and demolished by the following spring. 52:40 Jake underwent physical therapy for a month so he could learn to walk correctly again. 52:45 He then spent another three months in counseling to address the trauma of being trapped underground in complete darkness. 52:51 He refuses to discuss whatever he witnessed inside the shelter before escaping. 52:56 Whenever the subject arises, his expression becomes distant and he changes the conversation. 53:02 We remained roommates and best friends, but something between us changed that night. 53:07 Both of us learned how rapidly an ordinary college party could transform into a nightmare, and how the people pouring your drinks might be concealing something monstrous directly beneath your feet. 53:18 Jake graduated last May and accepted a position at an accounting firm downtown. I am now completing my senior year. Neither one of us attends house parties anymore. 53:28 Jake continues to sleep with a nightlight. Whenever he enters a room, he examines every door to ensure that he knows the locations of all possible exits. 53:38 Sometimes I find him staring into empty space while rubbing the scar on his leg where the broken bone pierced through his skin. 53:45 Whenever that happens, I know that part of him has returned to those tunnels, racing through the darkness and desperately trying to find the way out. 53:58 Story four. 54:00 Frank Dawson's Halloween decorations were famous throughout Cedar Ridge Drive, the sort of neighborhood attraction that real estate agents actually mentioned while showing nearby homes. 54:10 Every October, Frank transformed his entire front yard into something that belonged on the set of a horror film rather than a peaceful residential street in Portland. 54:20 His mannequins looked so convincing that delivery drivers refused to walk past them after sunset, choosing instead to leave packages near the edge of his property. 54:30 The fake blood he prepared had a glossy, dense texture that never appeared to dry completely. 54:36 He spread it across the driveway in patterns suggesting that someone had dragged a corpse toward the garage. 54:41 His display included motion-activated screams, flashing lights concealed among the bushes, and a fog machine that released thick clouds whenever anyone approached. 54:52 The entire property looked like a crime photographer's worst nightmare. 54:57 Over the years, the neighborhood had become accustomed to Frank's fixation and regarded it as an eccentric local tradition. 55:04 Parents brought their children past the house during the daytime for harmless scares. 55:09 Teenagers challenged one another to touch the corpse mannequin Frank always placed beneath his porch with one arm reaching outward. 55:16 Even the police had stopped responding to alarmed reports from visitors who were unfamiliar with his hobby. 55:22 Frank worked in construction during the day, but every free moment he had in October went toward perfecting his display. 55:29 Each year, he added new creations that he had spent months constructing inside his garage, sometimes beginning as early as January. 55:36 The previous year, he introduced one especially disturbing piece. 55:41 A mannequin dressed as a jogger lying across the lawn, still wearing running shoes with earbuds trailing from its ears. 55:48 Frank had positioned it as though someone had attacked the runner in mid-stride. 55:52 The attention he gave to small details was unsettling. He had even added sweat marks to the shirt and grass stains around the knees. 56:01 This year, Frank began setting everything up earlier than usual. Rather than waiting until the second week of October as he normally did, he started carrying decorations outside on October 1st. 56:12 From my living room window, I watched him arrange what resembled an entire crime scene across his property. 56:18 Yellow tape separated different sections of the yard, evidence markers stood beside pools of his distinctive fake blood, and bodies lay at unnatural angles throughout the grass. 56:29 Something about the primary centerpiece that year caused me to stop halfway through a sip of morning coffee. 56:35 In the center of Frank's lawn, beneath a spotlight he had installed, lay a man dressed in a business suit. 56:41 He was face down, with one arm reaching toward the sidewalk as if he had tried to crawl away. 56:47 The suit was a navy blue with understated pinstripes, exactly the type of clothing worn in any downtown office. 56:54 An open briefcase lay close to the figure, with documents scattered around it. 56:59 Frank had even placed an overturned coffee cup nearby, its dark content staining the paper's brown. 57:06 What disturbed me most was how fresh and natural the entire arrangement appeared. 57:10 Frank's decorations usually possessed an unmistakably theatrical character. 57:15 No matter how skillfully he created them, they were obviously artificial. 57:20 The businessman was different. 57:22 The fabric of his suit formed realistic wrinkles around the position of his body. 57:27 The soles of the leather shoes bore genuine scuff marks. 57:31 Whenever the wind intensified, I could have sworn the jacket moved in a way that looked far too natural for clothing placed on a stuffed mannequin. 57:39 Frank spent hours making minor alterations to the scene. He shifted the briefcase several inches, rearranged the scattered papers, and repeatedly stepped backward to study the composition like an artist examining a painting. 57:53 After he finally returned indoors that evening, I continued staring at the suited figure for much longer than I should have. 58:00 trying to identify exactly what made it so much more persuasive than Frank's earlier creations. 58:06 By the third day the odor began. 58:08 At first I assumed Frank had gone too far with some type of rotting food effect, attempting to introduce another sensory dimension to the exhibition. 58:17 The unusual October heat wave did not help. 58:21 Temperatures were reaching the mid-70s when they should have remained in the 50s. 58:25 Whenever the wind changed direction, a heavy, sickly-sweet odor drifted across my yard, forcing me to close the windows despite the warm temperature. 58:34 Other residents began doing the same. Mrs. Kalinsky, who lived two houses away, came over and asked whether I knew what Frank was using that year because the smell was unbearable. Her beagle would not even walk past Frank's property. 58:48 Whenever she attempted to lead him in that direction, the dog pulled against his leash and whimpered. 58:54 The mail carrier also began leaving Frank's correspondence at the end of the driveway rather than approaching the slot in his front door. 59:01 Frank either failed to notice the odor or simply did not care. 59:05 Every evening he walked outside with a beer, lowered himself onto the porch steps, and admired his creation as though nothing were wrong. 59:14 He waved to anyone passing and wore the satisfied smile of someone proud of his work, seemingly unaware that people were now hurrying past his property with their shirts covering their noses. 59:26 On October 4th, I finally approached him about the smell. 59:29 I found him adjusting some of the papers scattered around the businessman mannequin. When I came within 10 feet of the arrangement, the stench struck me like a physical barrier. 59:39 It was thick and cloying, causing my eyes to water and my stomach to turn. 59:44 It smelled nothing like the artificial Halloween fragrances sold at party stores. 59:49 When I mentioned it, Frank merely laughed. 59:52 He claimed he had ordered a new decomposition spray online that was intended to smell extremely authentic. 59:58 According to him, it was military-grade material used by crime scene cleanup teams during training exercises. 60:05 Standing so close to the businessman allowed me to notice several additional details that made my skin prickle. 60:11 A wedding ring encircled the figure's left ring finger, one of those tungsten bands that had become fashionable a few years earlier. 60:19 It was also wearing a functioning wrist watch. Through the crystal face I could see the second hand continuing to move. 60:26 The hair appeared genuine as well. It was not the synthetic material attached to inexpensive Halloween masks, but actual human hair, with grey streaks around the temples and individual strands shifting in the breeze. 60:39 I told Frank that the figure looked incredibly realistic. 60:42 A strange, almost bewildered expression crossed his face. 60:46 He said he had not introduced any new props that year. 60:50 All he had done was arrange his old decorations more effectively. His answer made no sense. 60:56 I had watched Frank assemble his displays for five consecutive years, and I had never seen that particular mannequin. 61:03 He dismissed my questions and resumed adjusting the crime scene. 61:07 Still, I noticed that he repeatedly glanced at the businessmen with a confused expression, almost as though he were attempting to remember where it had come from. 61:15 I could not sleep that night. 61:18 Part of the problem was the smell, which somehow continued to intensify. 61:23 The rest came from an uncomfortable sensation deep inside my stomach that I could not dismiss. 61:28 At approximately two o'clock in the morning I climbed out of bed and looked through my bedroom window toward Frank's property. 61:35 The streetlight cast elongated shadows over the display. 61:39 From the second floor I had a clear view of the businessman. Perhaps exhaustion was deceiving me, but its position seemed different. 61:47 The arm reaching outward appeared to have shifted several inches closer to the sidewalk I used my phone to take a picture. I told myself I was behaving irrationally but still wanted some form of evidence. 61:59 The following morning I compared the photograph with the figure's current position. The arm had definitely moved. When I saw Frank collecting his mail that afternoon, I asked whether he had adjusted the display during the night. 62:12 He regarded me as if I were insane and said he had not touched anything since the previous evening. 62:18 Why, he asked, would he be rearranging decorations at two o'clock in the morning? 62:23 Everything truly unraveled on October 5th. 62:26 I was grading papers at my kitchen table when a disturbance erupted outside. 62:31 Dogs barked uncontrollably, vehicle doors slammed, and people began shouting. 62:36 Looking through the window, I saw that Mrs. Kalinsky's beagle had escaped and run directly onto Frank's lawn. 62:43 It headed straight toward the businessman. 62:45 The dog clawed at the figure while barking and whimpering, attempting to pull something loose with its teeth. 62:52 Mrs. Kalinsky screamed for her pet to return, but she refused to step onto Frank's property. 62:58 Frank rushed from his house and shouted at the beagle to move away from his display. When he approached closely enough to seize the dog's collar, however, he froze. 63:08 Every trace of color vanished from his face as he stared at the object the beagle had uncovered. 63:13 A wallet that had fallen from the businessman's pocket. 63:16 With trembling hands, Frank picked it up and opened it. From where I stood, I could see him silently repeating the same words as he examined the identification inside. 63:26 Oh God. 63:28 The police arrived within 20 minutes of Frank's call. It was not merely one patrol vehicle. Three arrived, followed by a van and several people wearing different uniforms. They began surrounding the property with genuine crime scene tape that looked remarkably similar to Frank's imitation version. 63:45 They forced everyone to remain at a distance. 63:48 Although I could not approach, I heard pieces of their radio conversations from my porch. They repeatedly referred to a missing person. 63:56 His name was Robert Henley, a local insurance adjuster who had failed to return home from work six days earlier. 64:03 His wife reported him missing on October 2nd, explaining that he left the office at the usual time but never arrived home. home. 64:11 The officers' treatment of Frank made it obvious that they suspected his involvement. They photographed the entire display and measured the distances separating the different props. 64:21 Frank continually shook his head. He explained repeatedly that all the mannequins were already in place when he began assembling the display on October 1st. 64:30 He assumed someone had entered his yard during the night and added decorations as an early Halloween joke. 64:36 Frank insisted that he believed the businessman was simply another dummy, perhaps one somebody no longer wanted and thought he would appreciate. 64:45 The medical examiner ultimately confirmed what the odor had been telling all of us. 64:49 Robert Henley had been dead for approximately six days. Investigators believed he had been murdered somewhere else and intentionally deposited in Frank's front yard during the night of September 30th. 65:01 The most significant discovery came when detectives recovered surveillance footage from a residence three houses away. 65:08 One of its cameras captured part of Frank's property. 65:11 The grainy recording showed a van arriving at approximately 3 o'clock in the morning on October 1st. 65:17 A person dressed in dark clothing pulled something heavy across Frank's lawn and spent roughly 15 minutes, arranging it among the Halloween decorations that Frank had left outside from the preceding year. 65:29 Whoever committed the crime knew precisely what they were doing. 65:32 They positioned Robert's body so that it blended perfectly with Frank's characteristic style. They even placed false evidence markers around it to make the body appear like another component of the scene. 65:44 One of the detectives later told me that the killer had probably observed Frank's decorations for years. 65:50 That person understood his habits, knew that he planned to begin setting up on October 1st, and expected him not to inspect closely anything that was already in the yard. 66:00 The murderer was never identified. The van had been stolen. 66:05 Authorities located it one week later, burned beyond use two counties away. 66:10 Robert Henley's homicide became one of those investigations that eventually goes cold when every available lead disappears. He had no known enemies. There were no valuable life insurance policies that might have motivated someone to kill him. 66:24 Investigators uncovered no extramarital relationships or gambling debts. Robert was simply an ordinary insurance salesman who coached Little League on weekends. His corpse remained incorporated into a Halloween exhibit for five days before anybody understood what it was. 66:41 Frank removed all his decorations the day after investigators finished processing the yard. He did not merely cancel the display for that particular year. He gave it up forever. 66:52 I helped him transport boxes to the landfill and watched him discard props worth thousands of dollars that he had accumulated over many years. 67:00 Frank told me he could no longer bear to look at any of them. Three months afterward, he moved away. 67:06 I heard that he relocated to Arizona, where Halloween was not treated as such an important occasion. 67:12 The family that purchased Frank's former residence has no idea why nobody along our street decorates for Halloween anymore. 67:19 They do not understand why we switch off our porch lights and pretend to be absent whenever October 31st arrives. 67:26 Some experiences simply destroy the spirit of a holiday. 67:30 Whenever I encounter that particular sickeningly sweet smell, whether it comes from roadkill, spoiled meat, or anything else, I return immediately to that yard. 67:41 I see Frank realizing that he had spent five days caring for a corpse. I picture him repositioning it, walking around it with his morning coffee, and feeling proud of how convincingly realistic his Halloween display looked that year. 68:00 Story 5 Every residence on Oakwood Drive had installed security cameras following a series of burglaries two summers earlier. 68:09 That was why the events of that night were recorded from so many different perspectives. 68:14 Since my divorce, I had lived alone and settled into an extremely predictable routine. 68:19 I worked late shifts at a distribution center outside Madison, Wisconsin. usually finishing at midnight, and followed the same route home five nights each week. 32 is not particularly old, but it is old enough to value a peaceful routine, especially after enduring the turmoil of a difficult separation. 68:39 Halloween fell on a Tuesday in 2017. The guys at work had decorated the loading dock with inexpensive plastic skeletons that glowed in the dark. 68:49 During our breaks, we shared fun-sized candy bars, complained about the new scanning system that constantly froze, and made the usual jokes about being trapped at work while children collected pillowcases filled with candy. 69:02 It was a completely ordinary night filled with ordinary conversations, right until I clocked out at 12.03 and walked to my car in the employee parking lot. 69:12 Madison becomes quiet after midnight, but the drive home that evening felt like traveling through an abandoned city. 69:18 I do not mean that merely because of the Halloween decorations. The university district normally had at least a handful of intoxicated students wandering through it, particularly on Halloween. 69:30 That night, however, every street was deserted. It did not simply feel empty. 69:36 Something about it felt wrong, almost as if everyone else had received a warning to remain indoors and I had somehow missed it. 69:44 Without any other vehicles on the road, the 20-minute journey seemed much longer. 69:48 There was only my car and its headlights cutting through patches of fog that had drifted in from the lakes. 69:54 Every home I passed still had its porch light shining, the universal Halloween indication that candy was available, even though it was far too late for children to be outside. 70:05 The McDonald's on Miller Road was dark. The gas station that normally operated around the clock had shut down its pumps. 70:12 Even the police cruiser commonly stationed near the industrial park's speed trap was absent. 70:17 By the time I reached my street, my mind was searching for reasonable explanations. Perhaps a major event was taking place downtown that I had not heard about. 70:27 Maybe the weather service had issued a storm warning, or perhaps exhaustion was causing me to overanalyze everything. 70:34 My driveway was a long gravel strip that curved slightly and extended approximately 40 feet from the street to the garage. 70:41 Overgrown juniper bushes planted by the previous owner during the 1990s bordered both sides. 70:48 As my headlights moved over the gravel and illuminated the route ahead, two figures became visible at the end of the driveway where it met the sidewalk. 70:56 They stood completely motionless facing me. Both wore vintage clown masks, not inexpensive plastic ones from a party store, but old-fashioned rubber masks with unruly orange hair, enormous red noses, and painted smiles stretching much too widely. 71:13 One figure was noticeably taller, perhaps 6 feet 3 inches, and wore what appeared to be mechanics coveralls covered in dark stains. 71:22 The shorter person, approximately 5 feet 8 or 5 feet 9 inches tall, wore a faded yellow raincoat even though it had not rained for weeks. 71:31 Neither moved nor spoke. 71:33 They resembled mannequins someone had positioned at my driveway as the worst Halloween joke imaginable. 71:39 My first assumption was that they were foolish college students. Madison was filled with them, and Halloween tended to bring out their worst decisions. 71:48 I actually laughed and reached for my phone, considering taking a photograph to show my coworkers. I imagined sending it with a message about the idiots trying to frighten me. 71:58 Then I drove closer and my headlights illuminated them more clearly. 72:02 That was when I noticed what the taller clown held. 72:05 A sledgehammer hung beside his right leg, gripped in one hand as though it weighed nothing. 72:11 It was not made of foam and was not a Halloween prop. It was a genuine sledgehammer with a worn wooden handle and a metal head that appeared to have seen considerable use. 72:21 The shorter person's hands were empty, but they remained strangely positioned near his stomach. 72:27 His fingers were spread apart as if he were pressing both hands against invisible glass. 72:32 Neither individual reacted as my car approached. They did not protect their eyes from the headlights, adjust their footing, or shift their weight. 72:41 They continued staring through the mask's eye openings. 72:44 Even from inside my vehicle, I could see their real eyes behind the rubber. They were wide, unblinking, and focused directly on me. 72:52 I stopped approximately 15 feet away, leaving the engine running. 72:56 Without consciously deciding to do so, I locked the doors. 73:01 The rational part of my mind insisted that this was merely an elaborate joke. My instincts were warning me of something entirely different. 73:09 These people were not intoxicated students hoping to provoke a reaction. Their posture seemed disciplined, rehearsed, and intentional. 73:17 I activated my high beams, covering them in brighter light. They still did not react. 73:23 As I examined them more carefully, additional details made my mouth dry. 73:28 Fresh mud covered the knees of the taller man's coveralls, suggesting that he had recently been kneeling in the dirt. 73:35 Something dark and wet coated the head of the sledgehammer, and it was definitely not rust. 73:40 Three parallel tiers marked the lower section of the shorter man's raincoat, almost as though something had clawed at it. 73:47 I reached for my phone and nearly dropped it while trying to call 911 without taking my eyes off them. 73:53 A female dispatcher answered on the second ring. In a composed, professional voice, she asked about my emergency. 74:01 I told her two people wearing clown masks were obstructing my driveway. 74:06 One carried a sledgehammer. They were not moving, and I was trapped inside my vehicle. 74:12 The dispatcher requested my address, which I provided quickly, before asking whether I faced immediate danger. 74:19 Before I could respond, both clowns tilted their heads toward the left at precisely the same moment. 74:25 It resembled synchronized swimmers performing some grotesque routine. 74:29 The movement was so abrupt and perfectly coordinated that I jumped, striking my knee against the steering wheel. 74:36 They're moving, I told the dispatcher, my voice finally cracking. 74:41 Please send somebody now. 74:43 She said officers were already responding and ordered me to remain in the locked vehicle and stay on the call. She asked me to describe their actions, but I could barely comprehend them myself. 74:54 The taller clown began tapping the sledgehammer against his open palm. 74:58 The blows were slow and rhythmic, and I could hear them through the closed windows. 75:03 The shorter one started swaying strangely, shifting from one foot to the other like a boxer preparing for a match. His outstretched fingers finally curled into fists. 75:14 Then they walked toward my car. They did not charge or hurry. 75:18 They approached with measured, deliberate steps that somehow felt more dangerous than running. 75:24 The dispatcher continued asking what was happening. 75:27 I narrated the events like an unwilling commentator, but my voice grew increasingly strained and high. 75:33 I told her they were approximately 10 feet away and that the taller one was raising the hammer. 75:38 I shifted the car into reverse and pressed the accelerator. The tires spun across the gravel as I backed rapidly toward the street. 75:46 My driveway curved, however, and precision driving was difficult while panicking in the dark. 75:52 I struck one of the juniper bushes. The car lurched and when I overcorrected, both rear wheels slid onto the grass in my front yard. The engines stalled. Within the sudden quiet, I heard their footsteps crunching over the gravel as they approached. The dispatcher said officers were three minutes away. Those three minutes felt like three hours with the clown masks reflected in my mirrors. 76:16 I restarted the engine at the exact moment the sledgehammer struck my hood. The deafening metallic impact left my ears ringing. A dent approximately the size of a dinner plate appeared directly in front of me. 76:29 The shorter clown placed both palms against the driver's side window. 76:33 Through the glass I could see every feature of his hands, dirt beneath the fingernails, scratches across the knuckles, and a gold wedding band on his left ring finger. 76:43 Somehow that ring made the situation worse. 76:46 It confirmed that these were real human beings, not Halloween decorations that had mysteriously come alive. 76:54 He slowly dragged his palms down the window, leaving greasy trails behind. 76:58 Then I heard laughter. 77:00 It was not the exaggerated cackle of a movie villain. It was a quiet, satisfied chuckle emerging from behind both masks. 77:08 I accelerated backward again, causing them to stumble away from the vehicle. 77:13 This time I managed to reach the street correctly. The dispatcher asked whether I was injured and whether I could drive to the police station, but I refused to surrender my property to those people. 77:24 I crossed the street and entered Harold's driveway. His home had numerous Halloween decorations. I left the engine running, pointed my headlights toward my house, and remained prepared to escape if the clowns pursued me. 77:38 From Harold's driveway, I watched them through my windshield while the dispatcher remained on speakerphone and requested updates every few seconds. 77:46 The clowns stood in my yard momentarily, looking at one another as though conducting a silent conversation. 77:53 The shorter one then approached my mailbox, a durable metal model my former wife had insisted we purchase. 77:59 The taller clown followed him. Without hesitation, the taller man swung his sledgehammer in a perfect arc. 78:06 Two strikes destroyed the post, sending the mailbox into the street with a hollow metallic crash that echoed through the neighborhood. 78:14 Nobody came outside. Harold did not appear, despite my being parked outside his home. 78:20 The Andersons next door, whose newborn normally awakened at every minor sound, remained inside. 78:26 Even Doug, who lived two houses away, worked in security and constantly monitored the street, failed to emerge. 78:34 Every residence remained dark and silent apart from the illuminated porch lights. It felt as if the entire neighborhood were holding its breath. 78:43 The two clowns proceeded along the road without hurrying. They maintained the same careful pace until they reached the Andersons' driveway. 78:51 What they did there still makes me nauseated. 78:54 The shorter man withdrew an object from his yellow raincoat, possibly a screwdriver approximately eight inches long. 79:01 He moved directly to the Anderson's minivan and punctured all four tires with quick, efficient movements. 79:07 I could hear the air hissing from where I sat. The taller clown attacked their garden gnomes with the sledgehammer. 79:14 Jennifer Anderson had spent years collecting those ridiculous statues. 79:18 He reduced each one to ceramic powder with a single strike. 79:22 They continued to Doug's property. 79:25 The taller man smashed the windshield of Doug's pickup truck. while the shorter one did something near the porch that I could not clearly see. 79:33 The dispatcher continued assuring me that the officers were almost there, only one minute away. 79:39 The clowns nevertheless moved steadily along the street as though they had unlimited time. 79:44 Every few houses they stopped and looked back at me, still sitting inside Harold's driveway with my headlights shining. 79:51 Each time they repeated that identical synchronized tilt of their heads. They wanted me to observe everything they were doing. They wanted me to witness the entire performance. 80:02 The most disturbing aspect was their silence. They did not cheer, shout, or make the usual noises associated with vandalism. There were only the sounds of objects being destroyed and those occasional quiet laughs traveling through the night air. 80:16 At last, I saw red and blue lights approaching. Two police cruisers moved rapidly down the street without sirens, their emergency lights flashing. The clown saw them as well. 80:28 They were standing outside the Thompson residence, approximately six houses away from mine. When the emergency lights appeared, they simply stopped. They neither fled nor panicked. 80:39 They turned and faced the approaching police vehicles. The cruisers stopped in positions that prevented their escape. 80:46 Officers emerged with their hands near their weapons and shouted commands I could not clearly hear. 80:51 Both clowns slowly raised their arms. The taller man continued holding the sledgehammer until an officer ordered him to release it. 80:59 The tool struck the pavement with a loud clang, seeming to break whatever spell it settled over Oakwood Drive. 81:06 Porch lights immediately began switching on. Residents emerged wearing pajamas and robes, all speaking at once. 81:13 Harold ran into his driveway and demanded to know why I was parked there, what had happened to my car, and what was going on. 81:21 I could not answer coherently. 81:24 I merely pointed toward the officers handcuffing the two people who still wore those horrifying masks. 81:30 The police collected my statement that night and questioned me again at the station the following morning. 81:35 The masked men were brothers from a town approximately 40 minutes away. Tommy and Carl Bradshaw, ages 26 and 29. 81:44 They had driven to Madison with a trunk filled with tools and could provide no rational explanation for doing so. 81:50 When police asked why they chose my street, why they initially waited outside my driveway, and why they committed the destruction, neither brother responded. 82:00 They remained completely silent during interrogation. They did not request lawyers or make demands. 82:06 They simply refused to speak. 82:09 The detective informed me that officers discovered my address written on a piece of paper inside their vehicle. 82:15 Three additional addresses from separate Wisconsin towns appeared on the same page. 82:20 Investigators could identify no relationship connecting any of us. 82:24 We had no mutual acquaintances, shared employers, or other links. 82:30 Both brothers pleaded guilty to menacing vandalism and property destruction. 82:35 Each received an 18-month sentence but served only eight months. 82:39 I never learned why they came to Oakwood Drive, why they selected my driveway as their waiting place, or why they specifically wanted me to witness their actions. 82:48 The security recordings from the neighborhood, including the footage from my own camera, showed them arriving at precisely 11.47. 82:57 They remained at the end of my driveway for approximately 36 minutes before I reached home. 83:02 During that entire period, they never moved or checked their phones. 83:07 They simply waited for me. 83:09 I still dream about those masks, the coordinated movements of their heads, and the gold wedding ring reflecting the light. 83:16 Three months later, I left the house and rented an apartment closer to my workplace. The building had a parking garage and a doorman. 83:24 Every Halloween, whenever I encounter children wearing clown costumes or see decorative masks displayed inside store windows, I remember that night. 83:33 I wonder whether Tommy and Carl Bradshaw are somewhere out there, possibly wearing different masks now and waiting at the end of somebody else's driveway. 83:46 Story 6 The final trick-or-treater who visited my house was dressed as a character from a video game I did not recognize. 83:55 I emptied all my remaining candy bars into his pillowcase simply because I wanted the night to be over. 84:01 My feet hurt after spending three consecutive hours standing near the entrance. 84:05 The inflatable dinosaur costume I had worn left me drenched in sweat. 84:10 Once I locked the door and switched off the porch light, I collapsed onto the couch and used my phone to order dinner. 84:16 My refrigerator contained nothing except expired yogurt and beer. 84:21 Antonio's was the only pizza restaurant still making deliveries that late on Halloween. 84:26 The restaurant's app behaved strangely and took an unusually long time to load. 84:31 Eventually, however, it accepted my order. A large pepperoni pizza, garlic knots, and a two-liter bottle of Coke. 84:39 The confirmation estimated a 45 minute wait. 84:43 Believing I had plenty of time, I removed the ridiculous dinosaur costume and took a shower. 84:48 The doorbell sounded just as I pulled a shirt over my head, my skin still damp. 84:53 Looking through the peephole, I saw a tall individual wearing a cracked skull mask and carrying what appeared to be a pizza bag. 85:00 That alone did not seem unusual on Halloween. 85:03 While distributing candy earlier, I had already encountered three delivery drivers wearing costumes. 85:10 When I opened the entrance, however, the man remained completely silent. His head leaned at a strange angle as though he were examining me through the mask's hollow eye sockets. 85:20 The insulated bag he held was completely black and displayed no branding. 85:25 It was not one of the red bags bearing Antonio's name that I had seen dozens of times. 85:30 He wore a weathered leather jacket over a black hooded sweatshirt. Dark marks, possibly mud or grease, stained his jeans. 85:38 After an uncomfortable amount of time, he finally spoke in a harsh whisper that scarcely sounded human. 85:44 He said the order cost $24.50. 85:48 I handed him $30 and told him to keep the remainder because I wanted the encounter to end. 85:54 Instead of immediately departing, he reached into his jacket and removed a crumpled receipt. He flattened it against his thigh before extending it toward me. 86:03 Thick work gloves similar to those worn by mechanics covered his hands. 86:07 Something dark had hardened around the fingernails. 86:11 The receipt was an ordinary white strip with the details of my order printed in a basic computer typeface. 86:17 It contained no Antonio's logo, telephone number, or address. 86:22 When I raised my head to question him, he was already walking away. 86:26 He did not approach any vehicle parked in my driveway. 86:30 An old gray sedan I had never seen before stood across the street. It had no delivery sign or company decals. 86:37 The man entered the sedan but remained there for approximately a minute without starting the engine. 86:42 I could have sworn that he continued observing my house from behind the cracked skull mask. 86:47 The pizza tasted acceptable, although it was slightly cold. 86:52 As I ate, I could not shake the uncomfortable feeling the encounter it caused. 86:56 Approximately 20 minutes later, I heard something outside. The noise was subtle, like an object being slowly pulled across concrete. The motion-activated light in my backyard turned on, covering the patio in intense white light. 87:10 Looking through the kitchen window, I could not see anything. 87:14 After 30 seconds, the light switched off as designed, plunging the yard into darkness once more. 87:20 I removed a flashlight from the junk drawer and approached the rear entrance to confirm that it was locked. 87:25 That was when I noticed moisture covering the doorknob. as if someone with damp hands had recently attempted to rotate it. 87:33 The scraping noise returned closer this time. It came from the side of the house where I stored the garbage cans. My neighbor's dog began barking and snarling uncontrollably. 87:43 I had never heard that normally gentle golden retriever behave that way. 87:47 I turned off every light inside my home and approached the living room window, looking carefully between the blinds. 87:54 The gray sedan had disappeared, but fresh tire impressions remained among the wet leaves where it had been parked. 88:01 My heartbeat pounded loudly in my ears as I gripped the flashlight with my sweating hand. 88:06 Then I saw him, or at least I believed it was the same man. 88:10 He stood near the distant boundary of my property, barely illuminated by the streetlight. He was the same height and wore the same leather jacket. The skull mask, however, had been replaced by what appeared to be a plain black ski mask. 88:24 Something was in his right hand, possibly a crowbar or tire iron. 88:29 He remained completely still, as if waiting for something. I picked up my phone to contact 911, but its screen had frozen on Antonio's app. 88:39 The application still identified my order as pending, as though no food had ever arrived. 88:44 The sound of breaking glass from a basement window threw me into complete panic. 88:49 I heard footsteps below me. They were slow and calculated. Whoever was moving downstairs tested each step to avoid the sections that creaked, behaving like someone who had listened carefully and learned the house's sounds. 89:02 My phone finally responded, allowing me to dial 911. 89:06 I whispered frantically to the dispatcher while retreating to the upstairs bathroom and barricading myself inside. 89:13 The footsteps halted at the base of the stairs leading to the main floor. Then I heard the intruder testing the basement door that opened into my kitchen. 89:22 Thankfully, I had installed a deadbolt on that door the previous summer. The dispatcher repeatedly instructed me to remain calm and said officers were approaching. 89:31 I could concentrate only on the sound of metal rubbing against metal as the intruder attempted to defeat the lock. Then everything abruptly stopped. There were no more footsteps and no scraping, only the sound of my own heavy breathing inside the cramped bathroom. 89:46 I sat inside the bathtub holding a baseball bat I had taken from my bedroom. 89:51 A police siren began sounding in the distance, growing louder every second. 89:56 Almost immediately, rapid footsteps moved through the basement toward the shattered window. 90:01 When officers arrived roughly three minutes later, the intruder had already disappeared. 90:06 He left muddy boot prints across the basement floor and numerous scratches around the deadbolt. 90:12 Police searched the entire house with their weapons drawn while I remained outside with a blanket wrapped around my shoulders, feeling as though I had somehow entered a television crime drama. 90:22 One of the officers, Officer Harris, emerged carrying the crumpled receipt from my kitchen counter inside an evidence bag. He asked me to verify the restaurant's name. 90:33 When I identified Antonio's, concern appeared on his face. The police had contacted the restaurant. Antonio's had no record of my purchase and employed no delivery driver matching my description. 90:45 Its final order had left the restaurant at 9.15, more than an hour before my pizza arrived. During the following hour, officers uncovered additional evidence that made the incident even more disturbing. 90:58 My security camera, which I had honestly forgotten was still functioning, captured everything in grainy black and white video. 91:06 The man had circled my home for at least 30 minutes before ringing the doorbell. He tested every window and entrance and even raised my garage door several inches so he could look inside. 91:17 At one point he stood immediately beneath the security camera and stared upward. His skull mask occupied the entire image, almost as if he intentionally wanted me to understand that he knew the camera was present. 91:29 Investigators discovered something else near my fence, a hardware store receipt stamped earlier that afternoon. 91:36 The purchased merchandise included work gloves, a crowbar, and zip ties. 91:41 An officer reviewing the recording with me pointed out a detail I had initially missed. Several frames showed a second person sitting inside the gray sedan. It was little more than a silhouette, but there was clearly someone else participating in whatever had been planned. 91:57 The detective assigned to my investigation was a tired-looking woman named Rivera whose blazer bore coffee stains. 92:04 She sat with me and explained the police theory. 92:07 The men had targeted residences throughout October, using food delivery as an excuse to inspect potential victims. 92:15 They watched for individuals who lived alone, studied their routines, and later returned to invade their homes. 92:21 Using Halloween as camouflage was apparently new. Because masks and costumes were everywhere, nobody would question a food delivery worker wearing a skull mask. 92:31 Rivera showed me reports from three additional neighborhoods where similar incidents had occurred. 92:37 Mine was the only case in which the intruders attempted to enter the residence that same evening. 92:42 She said the pizza itself was genuine. They probably purchased it from an inexpensive restaurant across town, so the delivery would appear authentic enough to prevent victims from contacting the police immediately. 92:55 The detail that affected me most was learning that investigators had discovered similar boot prints at another residence two streets away. 93:02 An elderly man living there had ordered Chinese food at approximately 8 o'clock that same night. 93:08 Officer Harris returned with more questions and a laptop displaying mug shots. He asked whether any of the faces seemed familiar. 93:16 There was no way for me to know. The man at my door had never removed his mask. The officers made me repeat the entire experience three additional times. With each account I remembered something new. 93:28 The way he tilted his head while examining the house, his labored breathing through the mask, and the chemical odor clinging to his clothing, which smelled like motor oil combined with something else. 93:41 At approximately 2 o'clock in the morning, after investigators photographed the scene and collected the receipt, Rivera told me police patrols in the neighborhood would increase. 93:51 She also recommended that I stay elsewhere for several nights. My sister lived approximately 40 minutes away in Tarut. From the police station parking lot, I called and attempted to explain, with a trembling voice, why I needed to stay at her home without terrifying her with the full details. 94:08 I remained there for one week. 94:11 I barely slept and jumped whenever a doorbell rang or a delivery vehicle passed outside. 94:17 When I eventually returned home, I installed an entirely new security system. Cameras covered every possible angle, and the motion detectors were sensitive enough to register a mouse. I also installed a video doorbell that allowed me to identify visitors through my phone. 94:33 The police never arrested the men, at least not as far as they told me. 94:38 After Halloween, the break-ins abruptly stopped, disappearing as though they had never happened. 94:43 Two weeks later, Rivera called and said investigators had located the gray sedan abandoned inside a downtown parking garage. 94:51 Someone had completely cleaned the interior. 94:54 The only remaining items were a stack of counterfeit receipts bearing the names of several restaurants and a box filled with inexpensive skull masks available at any costume store. 95:04 Months later, my neighbor told me the worst part. 95:07 On the same night as the attempted invasion, he had noticed someone in his backyard testing the door to his shed. 95:13 He assumed it was merely a group of intoxicated teenagers playing Halloween jokes and never contacted anyone. 95:20 Even after all these years, I no longer have food delivered directly to my residence. I collect every order myself or arrange to meet the driver at the gas station down the street, where bright lights and surveillance cameras cover the property. 95:34 Every Halloween my chest tightens whenever the doorbell rings. Even when I can clearly see children dressed as superheroes outside, I must breathe deeply before opening the entrance. 95:45 Detective Rivera was probably correct that the men belonged to an organized crew that eventually relocated to another city. 95:52 Sometimes, however, I wonder whether the man in the skull mask occasionally drives past my house. 95:58 Maybe he remembers the victim who escaped and is waiting for me to lower my defenses and order another pizza on an ordinary night. 96:06 I now keep the baseball bat beside my bed. 96:09 I have also become extremely skilled at identifying every harmless creek and settling sound my house normally produces. 96:16 That means I will immediately recognize when something is genuinely wrong. 96:20 The ironic part is that I later discovered Antonio's had actually closed at 9 o'clock that Halloween because its oven malfunctioned. 96:28 Whoever delivered my food had obtained a pizza somewhere else and gone through all that effort solely to make his twisted plan believable. 96:40 Story 7 It was one of those cold evenings in late October when the air carried the scent of damp leaves and pumpkin candles. 96:49 Both of my parents were working the night shift that Halloween, leaving only my younger brother Caleb and me at home. 96:55 He was eight years old and dressed as a vampire, although his fake fangs kept falling from his mouth. 97:02 I wore an inexpensive witch's hat and an oversized sweater. 97:05 Our neighborhood was not particularly luxurious, but the residents took Halloween decorations seriously. 97:12 Artificial spider webs covered the bushes, orange lights hung from the porches, and skeletons swayed from tree branches. 97:20 Everything felt safe and familiar. 97:23 I had walked those streets throughout my life and believed I knew everyone who lived there. 97:27 We began trick-or-treating at approximately six o'clock, while the sky still held a faded purple color and children raced between houses carrying plastic pumpkins. 97:37 Caleb repeatedly tugged on my sleeve to show me every residence with a fog machine or motion-activated ghost. 97:44 Nothing seemed unusual until I noticed a white van parked across from the Henderson family's house. 97:50 It had no company markings or decorations. It was entirely white, and its windows were tinted more darkly than normal, making it nearly impossible to determine whether anyone was inside. 98:02 I told myself it probably belonged to a friend of one of the neighbors. 98:06 Someone visiting for the holiday. 98:08 Approximately 20 minutes later, however, we turned onto Willowbrook Lane and encountered it again. 98:14 The same white van was parked near the corner. 98:17 I laughed nervously and remarked to Caleb how strange it was that the same vehicle kept appearing along our route. He did not even raise his head because he was too occupied with counting his candy. 98:28 I tried to dismiss it but my mind began connecting the details. The van had never passed us. Somehow it always arrived one street ahead. 98:37 I assured myself that paranoia was taking control and that perhaps two identical vans were traveling through the neighborhood. 98:45 By the time we approached the final few houses, most of the younger children had returned home and the streets had become quieter. 98:52 Porch lights switched off as residents exhausted their candy supplies. 98:56 Then I saw the van once more. It was parked halfway along Birchwood Court with its headlights switched off. 99:03 The vehicle was positioned at a slight angle facing us, as though it had stopped in the middle of making a turn. 99:09 I tightened my grip around Caleb's hand and announced that we were going home. 99:14 He protested, insisting that he wanted to visit only one more house, but I did not respond. 99:20 Something about the van, its silence and the way it appeared to be waiting, made the cold air sting the back of my neck. 99:27 When we reached our home, the porch light remained illuminated. A wave of relief swept through me. 99:34 Caleb ran ahead, already talking about emptying his candy onto the living room floor. 99:39 Before entering, I looked behind us one final time. The van moved slowly past the corner with its headlights turned off again. It did not stop or accelerate. It simply drifted along as though scanning the neighborhood. 99:53 I remained outside until it disappeared behind the trees, pretending to look at my phone so Caleb would not notice my fear. 100:01 My father arrived home shortly afterward. He is the type of person who keeps everything organized, from household expenses to the neighborhood watch schedule. 100:10 I immediately told him about the van, expecting him to dismiss my concerns. 100:15 Instead, he frowned and opened his laptop. 100:18 Our community used a shared surveillance system. 100:21 Every few houses, one of the residents had a motion activated camera connected to a neighborhood network. 100:27 Dad reviewed the recordings from earlier that evening, moving through the different time stamps while I stood beside him. 100:34 Although the footage was grainy, it was clear enough to confirm what I had seen. 100:38 The van first appeared near the Henderson residence, then on Willowbrook Lane, and once more on Birchwood Court. 100:45 Each time it remained stationary for several minutes with its lights off before proceeding to the next street. 100:52 My father enlarged an image of its license plate, but the numbers were too blurry to identify. He replayed one section in slow motion. 101:00 Inside the driver's seat, we both saw the silhouette of someone tall wearing what appeared to be a baseball cap. 101:07 The figure made no movements. It simply sat there and waited. 101:12 Dad contacted the police department's non-emergency number and provided the surveillance recordings. The dispatcher promised to send someone to investigate. 101:21 While he remained on the phone, I entered Caleb's bedroom to reassure him that everything was fine. Then I looked through his window. The van had returned. 101:30 It was parked three houses away, this time with its headlights faintly illuminating the pavement. The figure inside remained motionless, but I could tell that whoever occupied the driver's seat was facing our home. 101:43 Without speaking, I closed the blinds. 101:46 Two uniformed officers arrived approximately 30 minutes later and searched the street with flashlights. 101:52 By then the van had disappeared. 101:55 They collected my father's statement, transferred copies of the recordings onto a USB drive, and explained that they would submit an official report. 102:04 One officer mentioned that Halloween frequently attracted unusual traffic. Still, the expression the officers exchanged made it apparent that they considered the situation serious. 102:14 They left their contact information and promised to provide updates. 102:18 I barely slept that night. Whenever a vehicle passed, the sound of its tires moving across the damp pavement made me sit up and examine the window. 102:27 The following morning messages overwhelmed the neighborhood group chat. Three separate parents reported seeing the same van. 102:35 One said it stopped outside the family's driveway while the children were playing in the front yard. 102:40 Another claimed the driver lowered a window, shouted something, and then accelerated away. 102:46 Residents began sharing their surveillance videos. By noon, the van had been identified on several different streets. Some recordings showed it stopping near children who were walking without adults. 102:57 Nobody obtained a clear image of the driver's face. 103:01 Two days later, a detective called my father. The police confirmed that the van matched one connected to an attempted child abduction two towns away. 103:10 It was the same model, possessed the same dent in the rear door, and matched the same partial license plate information. 103:17 The suspect had not been arrested, but investigators were attempting to track him. 103:22 When Dad told me, I sat at the kitchen table staring at Caleb's candy bucket, which was still half full, and realized how close we might have come to something horrific. 103:32 It is the type of danger you never imagine reaching your own family until it does. 103:37 Even after all these years, Halloween feels different. 103:40 I still accompany Caleb, although he is no longer very little. 103:45 around the block. 103:46 I cannot prevent myself from examining every passing vehicle. 103:51 I understand that most people are harmless and simply going about their lives. 103:55 That night, however, taught me something I can never forget. 103:59 Sometimes the real monsters do not wear costumes, and they are not hiding inside haunted houses. 104:05 Sometimes they are parked silently at the corner, waiting for you to stop paying attention. 104:15 STORY 8 Certain moments carve themselves into your memory like permanent scars. That night became one of those moments for me. 104:24 I had spent weeks preparing for an ordinary Halloween evening with my son, Miles. He was 8 years old, energetic, and had talked for days about dressing as a pirate. 104:35 We lived in a peaceful suburb where everyone knew one another, the kind of community where neighbors waved from their driveways and children rode bicycles until the streetlights illuminated. 104:46 Before leaving, I tightened the strap holding Miles' plastic sword. His small hands gripped a pumpkin-shaped candy bucket. The air smelled of damp leaves and inexpensive fog machine smoke. 104:58 Orange lights flickered from every porch and the entire neighborhood glowed with the gentle excitement that only Halloween seemed capable of producing. 105:06 We moved from house to house laughing whenever Miles tripped over his costume or shouted thank you through his plastic mask. 105:13 He was extremely proud of how heavy his candy bucket had become. 105:17 Eventually, we joined a small collection of families traveling along the main road. 105:22 Children darted between lawns while their parents followed and talked behind them. 105:27 Everything felt safe, almost excessively perfect. 105:31 It happened when we reached the corner residents decorated with flashing lights and artificial tombstones. 105:37 I turned momentarily to greet a neighbor I had occasionally seen walking his dog. 105:42 During that brief moment, Miles disappeared. 105:45 I called his name, expecting him to leap from behind a bush and frighten me as he frequently enjoyed doing. 105:52 When he failed to respond, the laughter around me became indistinct background noise. 105:57 I searched the yard and the sidewalk before running toward the end of the street. 106:01 Miles was nowhere. His candy bucket lay overturned near the curb with sweets scattered across the wet lawn. 106:09 I questioned everyone around me, parents, children, anyone who might have noticed something. 106:14 Most shook their heads and said they had not seen him leave. 106:17 One woman, however, recalled seeing someone dressed as a firefighter guiding a young boy toward a white SUV. She assumed it was simply a parent helping his child return home early. 106:28 I ran down the street searching for the vehicle. but the area was crowded and headlights flashed everywhere. 106:35 By the time the police arrived, the neighborhood had become silent. The residents where we stopped, the one decorated with false gravestones, had turned off all its lights. 106:45 The officers asked me to describe everything I witnessed. I continually repeated the same useless details, the strobe lights, artificial fog, and children laughing. 106:56 I pointed at the corner house and insisted that we had been standing directly outside it. 107:01 When officers examined the property, however, it looked entirely different. 107:06 All the Halloween decorations had vanished. The porch was unlit, and wooden boards that appeared to have been there for years covered the windows. 107:14 I stood there in complete confusion, feeling as if someone had erased the entire display within minutes. 107:21 An officer shone his flashlight across the area where Miles' candy had spilled. Beneath its beam, the wrappers reflected almost like metal. Police questioned every resident on the street, but nobody knew who occupied the house. 107:35 One neighbor insisted it had been abandoned since he moved into the area. 107:39 Another explained that it had once belonged to an elderly couple who died years before. 107:44 Nobody had recently seen anyone entering or leaving. 107:48 When investigators consulted the property records, they discovered that the location did not even possess a registered street address anymore. 107:56 It appeared in the records merely as an empty lot without a dwelling number. 108:00 The more the police investigated, the less any of it made sense. 108:04 I remained outside until sunrise, repeatedly calling Miles' name until my voice broke. 108:10 For a moment, every shadow resembled him. Every distant laugh made my heart leap. 108:16 The officers promised that the search would continue. 108:19 As the days passed, however, their updates became shorter and increasingly hopeless. They found no tire impressions belonging to a white SUV. No surveillance video depicting anyone in a firefighter costume. and no wrappers from Miles' favorite candy near the location where I discovered his bucket. 108:38 It was as though the night had completely swallowed him. 108:41 Several weeks later, I began following the same route every evening after work. The house remained, or at least some version of it did. 108:49 I saw the wooden boards, vacant porch, and irregular lawn. 108:53 Occasionally, however, I noticed something that did not belong. 108:57 Sometimes a dim orange glow appeared behind one of the boarded windows. 109:01 Other times a strobe light flashed for half a second before disappearing. 109:06 I told myself that grief was deceiving me, but deep inside I knew I had not imagined the decorated house. 109:13 One evening near the month's end I parked across from the vacant lot and waited with my engine switched off. 109:19 The road was silent apart from the distant hum of traffic. 109:22 At almost the exact time Miles had disappeared, the porch light illuminated. 109:27 It was weak, like a failing bulb struggling to remain alive, but it was undeniably there. 109:33 Fog drifted over the lawn exactly as it had on Halloween. 109:37 I left the vehicle and approached the property, attempting to persuade myself that everything was a coincidence. 109:43 From the sidewalk I heard quiet laughter emerging from the house. They sounded like children's voices, giggling and echoing from behind the boards. 109:52 When I called out, everything immediately ceased. The light disappeared, the voices stopped, and only cold air continued moving through the trees. 110:00 I remained there for what seemed like an eternity before forcing myself to leave. 110:05 The following morning I returned with a police officer. The house had vanished once more. There was nothing but dirt and grass in the location where it had stood only hours earlier. 110:16 The officer advised me to avoid the area for a while. He explained that grief could distort a person's perception. 110:23 But I was not confused. I knew where I had been, and I knew what I witnessed. 110:28 Several months later, a neighbor I barely knew placed a small object inside my mailbox. 110:34 It was a plastic pirate sword, broken near the handle, the same inexpensive type whose strap I had tightened for miles that night. 110:43 There was no message or explanation. I contacted the police, but they could not determine who delivered it. They suggested that someone might have intended it as a cruel joke. 110:53 After that, I stopped demanding answers. Eventually, I stopped discussing the experience altogether. 110:59 Years have now passed and Halloween continues to make me uncomfortable. 111:04 Every October I remember the flickering porch light and the laughter behind those boarded windows. 111:09 Occasionally I drive through our former neighborhood, partly hoping that I will see the house again and partly terrified that I might. 111:17 Nobody ever located Miles. Nobody ever found the White's UV. 111:22 On certain nights, however, I swear I can still hear my son's voice in the distance calling from somewhere along that same street and asking whether we can visit just one more house. 111:37 Story 9 The nighttime air carried a combination of cold and lingering smoke from the bonfires people lit around Halloween. 111:45 I had spent the evening at a small gathering organized by an old college friend, someone who still believed themed costumes should remain compulsory regardless of our age. 111:55 It was after midnight when I finally departed, and the roads were nearly deserted. 112:00 The party took place in a rural area where the highway passed through long expanses of farmland and pine forest. 112:06 It was the kind of location where your headlights seemed like the only thing preventing the darkness from consuming the entire world. 112:13 I remember the extraordinary silence. There were no other vehicles and no music, only the steady sound of my tires against the asphalt. 112:22 Several miles along the highway, flashes of red and blue began reflecting from the trees ahead. 112:28 I initially assumed there had been a collision or that police had established a drunk driving checkpoint because it was Halloween night. 112:35 As I reduced my speed, I saw two figures wearing reflective jackets standing near a group of orange traffic cones. 112:42 A patrol car was parked at a slight angle along the shoulder. its emergency light rotating. 112:48 One of the men signaled for me to stop. His hand movements were rapid and almost impatient. 112:54 The second figure stood unusually close to him. He did not appear to be performing any duty and merely watched. 113:01 I lowered my window halfway and greeted the man who approached. He leaned down and requested my driver's license in a polite but abrupt voice, sounding like someone repeating a memorized sentence. 113:13 Something about his voice did not correspond with the badge reflecting beneath the emergency lights. He sounded far too young. 113:21 After I handed him my license, he directed his flashlight through the interior for much longer than necessary, pausing over the passenger seat. 113:29 Behind him, the other man paced instead of attending to any supposed checkpoint responsibilities. 113:35 He moved in slow circles, his footwear crunching against the gravel. 113:39 Except he was not wearing police boots. When he approached more closely, the reflected light revealed white sneakers. 113:47 It took me longer than it should have to understand the importance of that small detail. 113:52 I examined the patrol car again. Its paint appeared unusually dull as though it were an old vehicle someone had repainted. 113:59 The markings also seemed incorrect and positioned too closely together. 114:04 Nervousness prickled across my skin, and I began asking which police department employed them. 114:10 Before I finished the question, headlights appeared in my rearview mirror. They were bright, steady, and approaching rapidly. 114:17 One second later, the unmistakable sound of a genuine police siren cut through the darkness. 114:23 The man holding my license froze briefly, then turned and shouted something I could not understand. 114:29 Both men sprinted toward the tree line and vanished into the forest as the new cruiser stopped behind me. 114:35 The real officer who emerged was older. His calm expression contrasted sharply with the confusion I had just witnessed. 114:42 He ordered me to keep my hands visible and cautiously approached with his flashlight held steady. 114:48 I explained that two men had stopped my car, taken my license and fled. He immediately reported the incident over his radio and instructed me to remain inside my vehicle. 114:58 Additional patrol cars arrived within minutes, their flashing lights reflecting among the trees like some eerie warning. 115:06 An officer directed a flashlight into the forest, revealing a narrow trail of footprints descending toward a creek. 115:13 Police discovered my license near the traffic cones partially covered by gravel. Several other identification cards lay beside it, at least five in total, along with a pair of zip ties and what appeared to be a counterfeit police badge. 115:27 The false patrol vehicle proved to be an aging sedan repainted and covered with magnetic decals that peeled away when officers touched them. 115:35 Realizing how easily the deception could have fooled someone else made my skin crawl. 115:40 If the genuine cruiser had not arrived, I had no idea what the men intended to do to me. 115:45 That question repeated endlessly in my thoughts while I waited inside my running vehicle with warm air flowing through the vents. 115:53 The officers requested descriptions, but I could provide only limited details. 115:57 One suspect was tall and had a shaved head. The second was heavier and wore the ridiculous white sneakers. 116:04 Both had reflective jackets, but the garments did not match. 116:08 One jacket was torn near the shoulder, while the other appeared new. 116:12 The officers exchanged meaningful glances after hearing that detail. 116:17 One quietly explained that similar false checkpoints had been reported along other nearby roads earlier that evening. 116:23 That information disturbed me more than anything else. It meant the men were not improvising. They had deliberately planned the scheme and had perhaps even rehearsed it. 116:33 When I finally reached home, I parked in the driveway and remained behind the steering wheel for a long time. 116:39 The adrenaline had disappeared, leaving a dull heaviness in my chest. 116:43 My phone repeatedly illuminated with missed calls and messages from friends asking whether I arrived safely. 116:50 I could not yet bring myself to answer. 116:53 Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the crooked badge reflecting beneath the emergency lights and those white sneakers moving toward the shadows. 117:01 Even weeks afterward, whenever I passed that section of highway, I automatically slowed down and half expected the fake officers to appear again. 117:10 Several days later, a detective from the county sheriff's office contacted me with an update. The authorities were still attempting to identify the men who fled, but investigators believed they had participated in similar setups on other rural roads that same night. 117:26 They primarily targeted people traveling alone, particularly women returning home late. 117:31 That detail made my stomach turn. The detective thanked me for remaining composed and giving a clear report. 117:38 I had not felt composed. The events continued replaying in disconnected fragments. The counterfeit patrol vehicle, the crooked badge, and the way one man continuously circled my car as though waiting for the proper moment. 117:53 For weeks, I avoided traveling alone after dark. Whenever driving at night was unavoidable, I placed my phone on speaker and remained in conversation with a family member while keeping my attention fixed on the road. 118:05 Friends teased me for behaving irrationally. 118:08 Then news emerged of another fraudulent checkpoint two counties away. The same false police lights and reflective jackets were involved. In that case, the victims drove through without stopping, which probably saved them. 118:22 I could not stop thinking about how close I had come to being one of the people who were not fortunate enough to escape. 118:29 The sheriff's office eventually established that someone had stolen the fake patrol vehicle from a small automobile auction lot. 118:36 The identification cards found beside the cones belonged to individuals robbed in nearby communities several weeks earlier. 118:43 It appeared that the suspects collected trophies, fragments of other people's identities that helped make their deception more convincing. 118:51 I never learned whether authorities captured them. 118:55 The telephone updates eventually ended, and the incident gradually disappeared from local news coverage. 119:01 I never traveled along that section of highway again. Even after all these years, flashing lights on a dark roadway make my heart accelerate before reason catches up with fear. 119:11 I stop only in brightly illuminated areas and carefully examine every badge and uniform. 119:17 The men are probably long gone and may even have been arrested. 119:21 The terror they created, however, still accompanies me. 119:24 Sometimes the wind moves through the trees at night, and I catch red and blue lights flashing between the branches. 119:30 Whenever that happens, I must remind myself that it is only passing traffic, not an echo of the Halloween night when monsters disguised as police officers attempted to make me disappear.
