Two Australian productions have won awards at the 2026 Japan Prize, an international competition organised by NHK. One of them is the animated series Tales From Outer Suburbia: Moonfish. Last year, we interviewed the series’ director, Noel Cleary, and Norihiko Wakutani, who provided dialect coaching for an episode featuring Japanese pearl divers. Lion's Head is a traditional Chinese dish believed to have originated in the Shanghai and Yangzhou regions. Its name comes from the large pork meatballs, which resemble the size of a lion's head. The version featured here, Lion's Head Hot Pot, combines these oversized pork meatballs with Chinese cabbage, slowly simmered until tender. Since 1972, Canberra-based tanka poet Saeko Ogi (95) has made her home in Australia’s capital. A woodblock print exhibition inspired by her tanka poetry is celebrating her long creative career.
